LOCATION Nassau, Bahamas
MGE was commissioned to modernize and expand 25-year-old Doctors Hospital, the only private hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. The original hospital was outdated and with numerous code violations. After an exhaustive study was done, it was concluded that the best course of action would be to construct a replacement facility on site while the existing hospital remained in operation, which cleared the path to create efficient spaces in a new structural shell and use the former hospital for support areas, such as administration, business office, etc. The site was redesigned to separate visitor, service and ambulance traffic. A new landscape perimeter was created in this tight, urban site, helping to emphasize the hospital and rebrand the facility. The exterior was designed to create a new image, using a one story base with bold, diagonal pattern to unify the buildings and the upper floors using individual windows painted in traditional coral color. The number of beds increased from 44 to 72, expanding the proportions of single to double rooms. In addition, new Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum (LDRP) suites introduced the concept of single bed delivery to the hospital. A new, four OR surgical suite was included, along with imaging facilities, critical care units and laboratory.
