Jackson South Memorial Hospital

Miami, Florida

MGE’s project for Jackson South Community Hospital is a major renovation and expansion of the emergency and imaging departments, surgical areas, laboratory facilities, pharmacy, administrative offices, energy plant, and parking areas.  A 4-story patient tower includes all private inpatient rooms.

The design honors the community served by the hospital. Inspired by the South Florida landscape, each of the building’s three floors is represented by a different element of the Everglades.  Colors are used as navigational aids: greens (grass), blues (water), and oranges (flowers), and are reflected in the design of signage, lighting, reception desks, and flooring on each level.

A wide, first-floor corridor spanning the hospital’s East-West axis serves as a public mall offering access to the various departments. The corridor is curved to visually shorten its apparent length. High ceilings and an exterior glass wall let in an abundance of natural light.

The corridor leading to the adjacent Healing Garden, features built-in etched-glass niches describing flora known for their healing properties.  A dramatic glass lobby also brings in natural light, and serves as an exhibition space for local artists.
