The 115,000-square foot neuroscience research facility on the University of Miami Medical School campus houses the world-renowned Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Anchoring the southwest corner of the Schonig Research Quadrangle, the state-of-the-art facility brings together all elements of the multi-pronged assault on paralysis, stroke, brain trauma, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Designed to withstand Category 3 hurricanes, the seven-story building houses research labs, conference rooms, classrooms and administrative offices that can be transformed into labs when expansion becomes necessary. Research floors are designed as open labs with 12 x 24-foot modules that provide occupants with numerous configuration options, promoting communication and collaboration.
The core of the L-shaped lab floors is anchored by a vertical circulation core, which offers restricted access from elevators and corridors. The Center features access controls for high security. A seventh floor sloped-floor auditorium is used for teaching and conferences. Common areas accommodate artist-designed donor recognition plaques.
